Argentina begins soybean meal exports to China

According to an article by Yahoo Finance, several companies from the People’s Republic of China agreed to their first purchase of soybean meal from Argentina. This event would mark the first shipment of such a product since the Asian country officially approved imports from the South American nation in 2019.
It is worth noting that China’s animal feed industry is currently diversifying its supply markets, in response to potential challenges stemming from the ongoing trade conflict with the United States.
The first shipment of Argentine soybean meal to China is expected to take place in July 2025, after several Chinese animal feed producers jointly signed an agreement to import 30,000 metric tons of the product.
In this regard, a Singapore based trader from an international trading company that exports soy to China stated that this initial purchase is a test. He explained that if the product passes inspection and quarantine by Chinese authorities, future deals and import agreements could follow.
The same trader noted that the purchase of these 30,000 metric tons of Argentine soybean meal aims to create a reserve to offset supplies previously sourced from the United States.
This initial shipment was agreed at a base price of $360 per ton and is expected to arrive in about two and a half months, in September, with its destination being China’s Guangdong Province.
Currently, the People’s Republic of China is the world’s largest consumer of protein-rich raw materials for animal feed. However, a significant portion of its domestic production relies on crushed soybeans imported from the United States and Brazil.
In recent months, Chinese producers have increased purchases of Brazilian soy as an alternative, due to the trade conflict with the United States, which has resulted in high tariffs on goods entering or leaving the Asian country.
It is important to highlight that China opened its market to Argentine soybean meal in 2019, but the first import only materialized six years later, due to national protectionist policies aimed at supporting local producers.
Last but not least, it is noted that in 2024, China imported shipments of soybean meal totaling approximately 30,000 tons, mainly from Denmark. Meanwhile, Argentina remains the world’s largest exporter of soybean meal and oil.
