Brazil leads the market for chinese electric vehicles

Brazil has surpassed Belgium to become the largest export market for Chinese electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Exports of these vehicles to Brazil increased 13-fold compared to the previous year, reaching 40,163 units in April. This impressive figure positions Brazil as the main export market for Chinese new energy vehicles for the second consecutive month.

This shift is largely due to the European Union’s anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric vehicles, prompting Chinese companies to actively seek alternative markets outside Europe. In response, Chinese car manufacturers have focused their efforts on South America, Australia, and Southeast Asia.

Not only has Brazil led in the importation of electric vehicles, but it has also become the second largest export destination for all types of Chinese automobiles in April, trailing only Russia. This increase in exports to Brazil comes ahead of the implementation of new tariffs on electric and hybrid vehicle imports scheduled for July, a measure driven by President Lula da Silva to encourage local car production.

In this context, several Chinese manufacturers are increasing their investments in Brazil. BYD, for example, is constructing a manufacturing complex with plans to start local production by early 2025. Great Wall Motor is also preparing for its plant in Brazil to begin operations this month.

Additionally, BYD has made a significant step in its export logistics with the launch of the Explorer 1, its own vehicle cargo ship. This ship, which made its second voyage to Brazil in April, arrived at the port of Suape in Pernambuco with 5,549 electric and hybrid vehicles, including new models like the BYD King and the BYD Song Pro.

During the first four months of the year, total exports of Chinese cars increased significantly in several markets. Exports to Russia, the main destination, grew by 23% to 268,779 vehicles. Exports to Mexico and Brazil increased by 27% and 536%, respectively, with Brazil importing 106,448 vehicles during this period.

Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association, anticipates that Russia will remain the primary export market for Chinese cars due to Western sanctions. Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers continue to explore new opportunities in South America and other regions in response to restrictions in Europe and the United States.
