According to an official statement from the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge of Colombia, on June 9, 2025, a memorandum of understanding was signed between said institution and China Media Group (CMG), the state-owned media organization of the People’s Republic of China.
The purpose of this memorandum is to contribute to the development of cultural cooperation between Colombia and China, promoting mutual understanding between their peoples and strengthening the already existing strategic partnership between both nations.
As a result of this agreement, Colombia will be able to expand the promotion and dissemination of its artistic and cultural initiatives in China, increase its visibility in the Asian country, and foster the exchange of knowledge and practices, as well as the development of bilateral cultural tourism.
The memorandum also promotes collaboration in audiovisual productions, access to emerging formats and high-level technologies, and the exchange of professionals in the sector in order to strengthen local capacities.
Regarding the signing of the memorandum, the Minister of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge, Yannai Kadamani, stated: “This is a favorable moment to generate multiple partnerships in which we can come together through cultural exchange. If we want change, the first thing we need is cultural understanding.”
Among the main actions contemplated in the memorandum are: technical exchange in radio, film, and television; training opportunities for the signatories; co-production of documentaries; dissemination of audiovisual works from both countries; and cooperation in media and content related to culture, art, and heritage.
The agreement also includes joint provision and technical assistance for projects such as “Creative Energy,” focused on the production and publication of audiovisual, digital, and sound content. It also contemplates cooperation for the direction and production of programs, as well as the joint organization of bilateral cultural heritage events, which will help showcase the history and identity of both nations.
Additionally, it is expected that, as a result of this memorandum, the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Hispanic founding of the city of Santa Marta can be shared in Asia, highlighting its cultural, historical, and heritage richness, and creating new opportunities for local artists to present their work to a broad audience in China, the Asian continent in general, and through CMG’s 51 channels, 11 of which have international reach.
The memorandum also provides for the creation of a Joint Monitoring Committee by the signatories, composed of representatives from both parties, with the purpose of overseeing the implementation of the agreement.
For his part, the Chinese ambassador to Colombia, Zhu Jingyang, emphasized the significance of this memorandum, stating that the Asian country considers Colombia “an international power, a gateway to the Spanish-speaking world and Latin America.”
Last but not least, it is worth noting that both nations currently have an Executive Program for Cultural Cooperation, signed in 2023 during the official visit of President Gustavo Petro to the People’s Republic of China.
This program aims to develop bilateral cultural ties through the promotion of artistic exchanges and mutual training processes for artists, creators, and cultural knowledge holders from both countries.
Among the tangible results of this executive program are the participation of Colombian musicians in international festivals held in China, and the joint celebration of Chinese New Year 2025 in the city of Bogotá.
