ProColombia is a government agency belonging to the executive branch of the Colombian Government, which promotes exports, international tourism, and foreign investment to Colombia to provide national companies with support and advice for their international trade activities. The entity recently highlighted that China was the Asian country with the highest investment in Colombia in 2021, a leadership position it has maintained since 2018.
For this year, business deals for more than USD 2,048 million are expected in regions such as Antioquia, Bolivar, Meta, Valle del Cauca, and Bogota. Flavia Santoro, president of ProColombia, mentions that China is a partner with high investment potential in the country’s strategic sectors such as the creative economy, technology, logistics infrastructure, and energy and that it offers great possibilities to increase both exports and the number of Asian tourists coming to the country. The companies in charge of such projects include China Harbour, an engineering contractor, and a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), which provides infrastructure construction, and marine engineering, among others. Another Chinese company working in Colombia is the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), which serves as the Foreign Aid Office of the Ministry of Railways. The CCECC is in charge of the Regiotram program (Tren de la Sabana) in Cundinamarca. Finally, in addition to other projects, the BYD car company owned by the Chinese multinational is bidding for 64 electric buses for Medellin and 1,002 for Bogotá. Finally, Flavia mentioned that these projects are expected to create more than 40,300 jobs.
