The President of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Xi Jinping, sent a message of condolences to Cuba today for the serious industrial fire in some fuel depots in the western province of Matanzas. So far the material losses have not been quantified.

According to the first hypothesis, the fire started around 19:00 local time last Friday (August 5) when lightning struck the bottom of the fuel depot and exceeded the capacity of the lightning rod system. According to the governor of the western province, Mario Sabines, tank two, which was already on fire, exploded due to a crack and leaked all the fuel.

In response, PRC Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin announced that the Chinese Red Cross has decided to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to Cuba after a fire broke out in the oil storage area of the Matanzas supertanker base. For its part, Canal 8 newspaper reports that so far, 16 people are missing and 122 have been injured, and that one person has died. Finally, more than 4,000 people have had to evacuate their homes due to the proximity of the fire.
