The Government of Ecuador announced it will begin a new phase of trade cooperation with China in September, focused on developing phytosanitary protocols to increase the number of Ecuadorian products allowed into the Chinese market. The plan was presented by Minister of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries Luis Alberto Jaramillo during an event hosted by the Ecuador-China Chamber of Commerce.
Jaramillo said that Ecuadorian authorities will travel to China for an official event and use the occasion to launch three technical commissions established under the bilateral trade agreement that entered into force in 2024. These include a commission on free trade, one on customs procedures, and another specifically addressing phytosanitary regulations.
The minister emphasized that expanding these protocols is essential to diversifying exports. Between January and May 2025, non-oil exports to China increased by 13%, with shrimp as the leading product, generating USD 999 million in revenue.
Since the agreement took effect, Ecuador has begun exporting canned tuna to China duty-free. The government now aims to include pork and poultry exports, pending the completion of technical procedures. Jaramillo noted that the private sector is already making significant progress on this front.
The customs commission will also address traceability, security, and logistics for outbound shipments. In parallel, Ecuador has presented China with a portfolio of renewable energy and infrastructure projects, which are currently under technical review by the Ministry of Energy and Mines.
China is currently Ecuador’s third-largest destination for non-oil, non-mineral exports and its second-largest overall trading partner. In 2024, bilateral trade exceeded USD 10 billion, according to the Ecuador-China Chamber of Commerce.
