According to an article by the media outlet Kaieteur News, during the 53rd anniversary meeting of diplomatic relations between Guyana and China, the Ambassador of the Asian country, Yang Yang, commented that her nation seeks to contribute to the modernization of Guyana through the Belt and Road Initiative.
Specifically, Ambassador Yang Yang stressed that the relationship between China and Guyana is one based on respect and mutual congruence focused on the economic development and modernization of the Caribbean country. She also stressed the importance of Guyana as a strategic partner of the People’s Republic of China in the Caribbean region.
Likewise, the Chinese diplomat commented that she hopes that Guyana will continue to remain an active player in the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. It is worth mentioning, that according to the Andrés Bello Foundation China Latin America Research Center, the Caribbean country signed the Belt and Road Memorandum of Understanding in July 2018.
Since then, bilateral trade between the two nations reached US$1.4 billion, a figure that quadruples the figures for 2019. In addition, the direct investment of the Asian country in the Caribbean went from 256 million dollars in 2019 to 10,600 million dollars in the year 2024; where the infrastructure projects of the New Demerara River Bridge and improvements in various regional hospitals stand out.
Also, Ambassador Yang Yang mentioned that as part of the Belt and Road Initiative, they are encouraging key companies of the People’s Republic of China to invest in Guyana, in favor of the modernization of the country and contributing to its economic transformation.
It is important to remember that the Belt and Road Initiative was inaugurated in 2013, by Chinese President Xi Jingping, and was presented as a global level strategy, with the purpose of developing regional connectivity, through investments in different sectors, such as infrastructure, energy, trade, agriculture, among others.
On Guyana’s side, since signing the memorandum of understanding of this initiative in 2018, the investment of the People’s Republic of China in the infrastructure sector and in public services has increased.
Regarding the case of Guyana, Ambassador Yang Yang stressed that the People’s Republic of China is committed to contribute to the development of the Caribbean nation, especially in this crucial period, in which the country is immersed in one of the greatest social and economic transformations of its history as a republic.
Likewise, the ambassador pointed out that cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and Guyana will not only be based on the usual sectors such as mining, agriculture, energy or agriculture, but other critical areas will also be developed.
In that line, the ambassador emphasized that the People’s Republic of China is willing to “work with Guyana to further leverage the potential for cooperation and expand collaboration from areas such as energy, mining, infrastructure, and agriculture, as well as in emerging fields such as digital economy, green development and artificial intelligence”.
Last but not least, Ambassador Yan Yang, commented that she hopes the two nations will continue to work together, with the aim of forming a fruitful future for the bilateral relations of the two countries.
