On May 25, the Government of Guyana signed a contract to build a new crossing over the Demerara River, called the Demerara Harbour Bridge, for US$260 million. The project will be carried out by a Chinese joint venture that includes China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC), China Railway Construction Co. Limited (Caribbean), and China Railway Construction Bridge Engineering Bureau Group Co. Limited. CRCC is state-owned and is engaged in the development of infrastructure projects.
The Demerara Harbour Bridge is the country’s largest infrastructure transportation project to date in Guyana. Vladim Persaud, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Public Works, signed the contract on behalf of the government, accompanied by several government ministers and Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan. This investment is expected to provide increased traffic capacity and will drastically improve traveler comfort.
