Joe Viera Park is located in Schoonord, West Bank Demerara in Guyana. The park is currently abandoned and is serving as a habitat for local wildlife. In 2022, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and Guyana will be celebrating their 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations which were established in 1972. To mark the occasion, the PRC has decided to invest US$10-12 million to build a Friendship Park between the two countries, using the Joe Viera Park as a base.
This project will provide the Guyanese with space for recreational activities, and is expected to commence in mid-2022, following the signing of the implementation agreement at the Office of the President of the South American country. The work is expected to be completed within 20 months. Meanwhile, Commissioner of Protected Areas Jason Fraser and the National Parks Commission said the aim is to retain and enhance the existing green space while providing areas for sporting activities such as football and basketball. Other features include a pond, canopies, a children’s activity center, and picnic areas. China’s Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan, said this is a testament to the long and continuing friendship between the two countries. The ambassador also expressed that China has always supported Guyana in people-centered development.
