According to an article from the media outlet Hondudario, as a result of an agreement made in 2023 between the President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, and the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, on May 26, 2025, the first Confucius Institute in the Central American country was inaugurated in Tegucigalpa. This institution will enable the learning of the Mandarin language, the understanding of Chinese culture, and will open new opportunities for Honduran students.
It is reported that this project was developed jointly by the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (SRECI), the Embassy of Honduras in China, the Francisco Morazán National Pedagogical University (UPNFM), the government of the People’s Republic of China, and the China working group, which will contribute to the development of the education sector in Honduras.
At the inauguration ceremony of the Confucius Institute, high-ranking authorities from both countries were present, including Eduardo Enrique Reina, Honduras’ Foreign Minister; Yu Bo, Chinese Ambassador to Honduras; Gerardo Torres, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs; Mariam Tavassoli Zea, Director of the China working group; Lexy Medina, Rector of the UPNFM; Yang Wei, Director of the China Foundation for International Education; and Zhang Hangzhou, Rector of Zhejiang International Studies University (ZISU), among others.
Referring to this new project, which will be located at the UPNFM, Honduras’ Foreign Minister Eduardo Reina stated that “the opening of the Confucius Institute represents much more than a center for teaching the language and culture of China: it is an academic bridge that connects our peoples and unites them in a deep and lasting way. With this institute, we are not only investing in education but also in building a global vision and in training new generations capable of engaging with the world from their roots.”
It is worth mentioning that this Confucius Institute is not the only joint project between the two nations. Several cooperation agreements have been signed, resulting in the construction of a convention center, an urban park, three sports centers, the provision of 5,000 pruning kits, the intervention of 300 educational centers, the donation of 298 ambulances, exploration of cooperation avenues in the energy sector, and the expansion of seven agricultural schools.
Last but not least, it is important to highlight that Honduras joins the 23 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean that, according to the database of Confucius Institutes of the Andrés Bello Foundation Chinese Latin American Research Center, have at least one Confucius Institute or classroom on their territory. Among them are Colombia, Mexico, Grenada, Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Suriname, Bolivia, Barbados, Brazil, the Bahamas, Cuba, among others.
