Honduras and China engage in dialogue on potential cultural and tourism cooperation

According to a report by Hondudiario, during the celebration of the second anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Honduras and the People’s Republic of China, the Minister of Tourism, Yadira Gómez, led a delegation that visited several cities across the Asian country with the aim of enhancing bilateral cooperation in tourism and culture, and attracting investment in both sectors.
As part of a ceremony held in the Chinese capital, Minister Gómez stated that Honduras is an ideal destination for tourists from the People’s Republic of China. For his part, the Honduran ambassador in China highlighted that since the beginning of bilateral relations in March 2023, there has been harmonious cooperation and mutual respect between the two nations.
So far, according to the authorities of the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History (IHAH), China will collaborate in the creation of a regional museum at the Copán ruins, which will be developed jointly with an archaeological research center.
The delegation, led by the minister, visited several cities, including Anji in Zhejiang province, where the Skyland scenic area is located. During this visit, the minister inspected mountain cable cars equipped with cutting-edge technology, which, according to her, could be implemented in Honduras. She also highlighted China’s innovations in tourism infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the Honduran Institute of Tourism (IHT) held a meeting with Alibaba’s platform Fliggy, aiming to reach an agreement to promote tourism packages with Honduras as a destination among buyers in the Asian market. Along the same lines, the Institute considered working with influencers and signing an agreement with the travel company Tongcheng Travel to include Honduras in its list of destinations.
During the visit to the city of Shanghai, the Honduran representatives met with Chun Xiaobo, director of the local museum, who stated that Honduras and China share many similarities, especially in the cultural field.
As a result of the visit to the city of Hangzhou, the World Tourism Alliance (WTA) extended an invitation to Honduras to participate in the Xinhui Dialogues, which will be held in November and are regarded as an important forum for sustainable tourism. In this regard, Minister Gómez stated that collaborating with this organization will be beneficial for Honduras, as it will help improve its international standing.
In the city of Suzhou, topics related to bilateral cooperation in tourism and clean energy were discussed, during a visit to the Humble Administrator’s Garden. In Nanjing, an agreement was reached to exhibit Mayan archaeological artifacts in the city, promoting Honduran culture in China.
Regarding meetings with Chinese companies such as Tinui and CGT Travel, the Honduran delegation and the companies discussed strategies to attract Chinese tourists to Honduras, including the training of Honduran tour guides. In this regard, CGT’s director, Wu Liang, agreed with the delegation to promote Honduras as a world-class ecotourism destination.
In the academic field, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) committed to promoting archaeological research in Copán and facilitating expeditions by Chinese experts to the site during this year.
Last but not least, Minister Yadira Gómez and the company CAMCE signed a letter of intent to explore the feasibility of building cable cars in Honduras, based on the sustainable and innovative models already implemented by the People’s Republic of China.
