Guatemala, Paraguay, and Argentina take a stand on Taiwan
As of July this year, the People’s Republic of China has undertaken military exercises -using live fire- on the border it shares with Taiwan. The development of these activities has created tension in the international system, manifested by Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, recent visit to Taiwan.
In the Latin American and Caribbean, there have been several declarations in this regard. In Argentina, the ambassador to China, Sabino Vaca Narvaja, has labeled the US official’s visit as a clear provocation by the US to the Asian country, and even as a threat to international security. At the same time, the Argentine diplomat affirmed that they defend and adhere to the principle of One China. Despite this, there has been no official statement from the Argentine presidency. On the other hand, the presidents of Guatemala and Paraguay, Alejandro Giammattei and Abdo Benítez respectively, expressed their support to the Republic of China (Taiwan), requesting respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of said nation, based on the peoples’ right to self-determination.
