On November 26, the People’s Republic of China highlighted the strength of its bilateral relationship with Mexico, describing both countries as “trusted friends and partners in joint development.” The spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mao Ning, emphasized that trade cooperation between China and Mexico is based on market principles and international norms, and that the politicization of economic and trade matters benefits none of the parties involved.
Mao Ning underscored that imports of Chinese products have strengthened Mexico’s manufacturing sector, improving its trade competitiveness and benefiting its population. China expressed its desire to maintain positive cooperation with Mexico and promote mutual development between the two nations.
These statements were made in response to remarks by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who denied allegations that Mexico serves as a transit route for Chinese products to the United States and Canada. Sheinbaum assured that her government would provide evidence to Washington and Ottawa to prove otherwise, emphasizing her administration’s focus on developing national industries, increasing local components in products, and substituting certain imports from China.
The context of these statements includes concerns raised by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump regarding Chinese investments and the entry of Chinese goods into North America via Mexico. Furthermore, Trump announced additional 10% tariffs on Chinese products and measures against Mexican goods due to migration issues and fentanyl trafficking. China responded to these announcements by stating that “no one wins a trade or tariff war” and rejected the accusations related to fentanyl, labeling them as “contrary to the facts.”
