According to an article by Yahoo News, on June 6, 2025, the state-owned company of the People’s Republic of China, Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC), began construction of a solar power plant in Nicaragua as part of a new joint project between the Central American country and China.
According to Gang Xingqiu, an executive at Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC), once completed, the project will become the largest green solar power plant in the Central American country.
Construction and the official inauguration of the plant are expected to take place by the end of 2026, specifically in the municipality of Nindirí, in the department of Masaya, with an investment of 83 million dollars.
Regarding the construction of the solar plant, Ervin Barreda, head of the Nicaraguan Water and Sewerage Company, stated that once inaugurated in 2026, “it will have an installed capacity of 70 megawatts and will include 112,700 high-tech photovoltaic panels.”
One of the main functions of this solar power plant will be to provide clean energy, primarily for sanitation and water services in the country.
This is not the first project by CCCC in Nicaragua. In March of this year, the company also began construction of another solar plant in the department of Matagalpa, which will have a capacity of 67.35 megawatts.
During the groundbreaking event, Laureano Ortega, son of President Daniel Ortega and advisor on investment and trade for the Nicaraguan government, highlighted what he described as the equal treatment and support that Chinese President Xi Jinping has shown toward Nicaragua.
Diplomatic relations between China and Nicaragua date back to 2021, when the Central American country severed ties with Taiwan. In 2023, both nations deepened their relationship to the level of a strategic partnership.
Since then, several companies from the People’s Republic of China have started operations in Nicaragua, securing contracts in sectors such as transportation, infrastructure, health, and mining. It is also worth noting that in 2024, a Free Trade Agreement between the two countries came into effect.
Last but not least, it is important to note that the government of Nicaragua has been subject to sanctions imposed by several European countries and the United States following the state-led repression of opposition protests in 2018, which, according to reports by the United Nations, resulted in approximately 300 deaths.
