President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China has been expressing his intention to strengthen relations between his country and Nicaragua since the beginning of this year. In the context of the New Year of the Tiger, the Chinese president told his Nicaraguan counterpart, Daniel Ortega, about his intentions for the two countries to deepen their relations and promote cooperation between them. It should be noted that in 2021 Nicaragua broke off its existing relations with Taiwan after 31 years. For his part, the Nicaraguan Minister of Development, Industry and Commerce, Jesús Bermúdez, has stated that Nicaragua has established a proposal for a legal framework that will allow the establishment of an FTA between the two countries.

In this context, Nicaragua’s Vice President, Rosario Murillo, has stated that China will grant a disbursement of USD $60 million for the development of a housing construction program. This disbursement is coordinated by the China International Development Cooperation Agency. However, the most important donation that has resulted from the rapprochement between the two countries since the resumption of diplomatic relations was made on August 8, the National Day of Health Workers in Nicaragua, and consisted of a wide variety of medical products and equipment, such as thermal cradles, monitors, ventilators and defibrillators. China also provided equipment to protect health workers from Covid 19.
