On January 6, the Confucius Institute at Universidad de Panama inaugurated the online summer camp to bring the 10 participating countries in Latin America and the Caribbean closer to traditional Chinese culture. Panama, Jamaica, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guyana, Peru, Mexico, Chile, and Ecuador participated in the event. The Confucius Institute at Universidad de Panama was, in turn, inaugurated in June 2018, and is considered a breakthrough in diplomatic relations between the Republic of Panama and the People’s Republic of China. Its purpose is to strengthen relations between the two nations through activities and seminars.

The online summer camp was delivered through a series of webinars which ran for three weeks and included different activities related to traditional Chinese culture such as Chinese painting, Chinese dance, kung fu, Mandarin lessons, among others. Li Wuji, Minister Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Panama, recognized the importance of this initiative and said that it is an opportune moment to promote Chinese culture given the circumstances surrounding COVID. On the other hand, Zheng Chengjun, Vice President of the Beijing University of International Studies, highlighted the contribution of the Confucius Institute to the friendly relations between China and Panama and recognized that, in 2019, the Confucius Institute at Universidad de Panamá won the Confucius Institute Award for Global Excellence. Finally, the online summer camp is expected to strengthen the cultural exchanges between China and Panama.
