Peru subscribes to APEC environmental commitments
Working in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, Peru’s performance in the area of sustainable development has been strong. This was evinced by Peru’s reiteration, in the most recent APEC forum, to establish and implement sustainable food systems and food security for its citizens. Thus, Peru has affirmed that it will coordinate the different APEC economies to formalize best practices on investment in environmentally friendly and sustainable food production, processing, and distribution.
Peru has also adhered to the APEC Chiang Mai Joint Statement. This declaration was established within the framework of the 5th Forestry Ministers’ Meeting, and it recognizes the global importance of forests and the sustainable use of wood. It also emphasizes the importance of their restoration and preservation. Peru’s representatives at the Forum were Nelly Paredes del Castillo, Executive Director of the National Forestry and Wildlife Service, and Andrés Alencastre Calderon, from the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation. Peru also participated in the 22nd meeting of the Group of Experts on Illegal Logging and Associated Trade, to reduce illegal activities related to timber. Finally, it was established that Peru will host the APEC Forum in 2024, representing a key milestone for Peru’s foreign relations.
