The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru, Juan Carlos Mathews, has announced that the fifth round of negotiations for the optimization of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Peru and China will take place in Beijing from May 30 to June 2. While acknowledging the significant growth in the trade relationship between the two countries, Mathews highlighted the need to address certain areas that are not specified in the current agreement, such as electronic commerce. The negotiations will focus on incorporating components that promote e-commerce and create opportunities for micro and small businesses.
The fifth round of negotiations is also intended to streamline customs procedures and provide advantages for co-investment between Peruvian and Chinese companies. Mathews expressed his satisfaction with China’s willingness to collaborate, and a delegation of 10 technicians from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) will work on various aspects of the negotiations. Although a sixth round of negotiations is anticipated, the ultimate goal is to secure approval for the optimization of the FTA before the end of this year.
