Uruguay’s Foreign Minister, Francisco Bustillo, is scheduled to travel to China next week for a series of meetings with Chinese authorities aimed at initiating negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Bustillo will hold discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang and Wang Shouwen, the Vice Minister of Commerce and Deputy Representative for International Trade Negotiations of China.

The primary objective of Uruguay is to recommence negotiations for an FTA with China, which were first initiated in July of the previous year. Both nations have already completed a positive feasibility study for the agreement as of 2021. Wang Gang, China’s ambassador to Uruguay, emphasized that the position of Argentina and Brazil does not have an impact on the potential FTA. While Uruguay is seeking progress in the negotiations, Brazil advocates for Mercosur to engage in joint trade agreement discussions with other countries.
