According to a report by La 17, during a conference in Miami, Mauricio Claver-Carone, current advisor to President Donald Trump and former head of the IDB, stated that Argentina’s swap agreement with the People’s Republic of China is being used as a tool of political pressure by the Asian country. In this regard, he noted that the United States seeks to help the Argentine government break free from what he considers a line of extortive loans.
Trump’s advisor expressed that the U.S. government supports the various policies adopted by President Javier Milei in areas such as the economy and highlighted that the Argentine president is regarded as an ally of the current U.S. administration. He also emphasized the fiscal progress Milei has achieved in his country.
In his remarks, Claver-Carone stated that both the United States and Argentina are working to strengthen their bilateral ties and finalize various trade agreements. As evidence of this, he pointed to the meeting between Trump’s Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and Argentine Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein.
Claver-Carone stressed that the main goal is to prevent this fund from strengthening China’s geopolitical position and to ensure that the new agreement being negotiated with the IMF does not deepen Argentina’s ties with the country led by Xi Jinping. Likewise, he warned that if this line of credit remains in place, China will continue exerting pressure on Argentina through extortive practices.
On another note, he mentioned that the U.S. government wishes success for Milei’s administration and that, if the proposed reforms are implemented, the United States could provide economic support to Argentina, facilitate investments in various sectors, and sign new trade agreements.
It is worth mentioning that during his tenure at the IDB, Claver-Carone repeatedly warned about the risks of Chinese loans in Latin America. Now, as part of the U.S. government, he seeks to reposition American influence in the region by forming alliances with politically aligned governments, such as Argentina.
Last but not least, the advisor assured that his intention is not to interfere directly in IMF negotiations but rather to express the strong stance of the United States on this matter and help resolve a problem inherited from previous administrations regarding China’s influence in strategic sectors.
