According to a report from Yahoo Noticias, during the BRICS meeting, which took place in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Mauro Vieira, Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Relations, met with Wang Yi, the Chancellor of the People’s Republic of China.
In this meeting, according to the media from Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Relations, the high-ranking officials held discussions on current economic and geopolitical issues, which are of interest to both nations and to the entire international system.
One of the main topics addressed in the context of this bilateral meeting, as well as in the general meeting of the five BRICS countries, was the ongoing trade conflict between the Asian country and the United States, which has led to an escalation of tariffs on the entry and exit of various exports and imports of Chinese and American products, as well as goods from other countries whose destination is the country led by Donald Trump, according to Yahoo Noticias.
Senior U.S. officials have stated that they are in the process of negotiating with the People’s Republic of China to resolve the trade conflict. However, Chinese officials have indicated that this is not true and have mentioned that they are prepared for this commercial conflict. Amid these discussions, both nations have tariffs exceeding 100%.
On the other hand, the chancellors of both nations also discussed the upcoming United Nations Conference (COP 30), which will be presided over by the Latin American country, specifically in the city of Belém, in the Amazon, in November.
Similarly, the high-ranking foreign relations officials discussed the upcoming visit of President Lula da Silva to the People’s Republic of China, which will take place on May 12 and 13, due to the summit between the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the Asian country.
Last but not least, it is expected that the discussions between the BRICS chancellors, during the general meeting, will be reflected in a document, which will serve as the basis for the public report that the heads of state will present regarding the forum, which will continue in July on the 6th and 7th in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
