Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Xi Jinping signed 37 agreements that strengthen the relationship between Brazil and China in key areas such as technology, energy, agriculture, and infrastructure. These agreements, stemming from a trade partnership that reached $136.3 billion by October 2024, solidify Brazil’s position as a strategic partner of China in Latin America. Xi Jinping referred to Brazil as a “reliable friend” and emphasized the importance of their collaboration in promoting peace and global development.
Despite not formally joining the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Brazil secured significant agreements that enhance its international standing and diversify its economy. Lula aims to reposition Brazil as a global leader after a period of isolation under Jair Bolsonaro, underscoring the importance of alliances with China in forums like BRICS and the United Nations.
In contrast, Argentina, represented by Javier Milei, held a meeting with Xi Jinping during the G20 summit, focusing on diversifying exports to China. However, no concrete agreements were reached, highlighting a gap in strategy and outcomes between the two countries. While Brazil cements its role as China’s priority partner in the region, Argentina faces the challenge of translating diplomatic efforts into tangible economic benefits.
The strengthening of ties between China and Brazil also reflects a regional trend of increasing Chinese influence in Latin America, contrasting with the historically limited attention from the United States and the European Union. However, the potential return of Donald Trump to the White House could accelerate this closeness while also posing risks of tensions with Western powers.
