Delegation of Brazil’s Worker’s Party meets with Communist Party of China in Beijing

A delegation from the Brazilian Workers’ Party (PT) – the party of current Brazilian president Lula da Silva – carried out a visit to China this week to participate in events and discussions organized by the Communist Party of China (CPC) with the objective of strengthening ties between both countries.

The visit was led by the president of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmann, who was accompanied by around thirty party representatives. During the week’s visit, the Brazilian delegation spoke with Chinese representatives about the political and economic relations between both countries.

Hoffmann emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between the two parties at a time when the far right is on the rise globally, highlighting the need for an alliance between progressive and leftist movements to counter this trend.

Li Xi, member of the CPC Central Committee, stressed China’s willingness to cooperate with Brazil in “various fields and at all levels”, with the aim of deepening collaboration and strengthening political trust between both nations. 

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil, as well as the 40th anniversary of direct relations between Brazil’s PT and the CPC.

Economic cooperation between Brazil and China, especially in the infrastructure sector, was a central topic of discussion during the visit of the Brazilian delegation. Hoffmann expressed Brazil’s support for the Belt and Road initiative promoted by China, which seeks to promote trade and bolster infrastructure development with countries across the globe.

The meeting between President Lula and his counterpart Xi Jinping in Beijing last year, followed by the decision to hold annual meetings to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, underlines the strategic importance of the relationship between the two countries.

The PT’s visit to China represents a step towards consolidating political and economic alliances at a time of global challenges, including the growth of the extreme right.
