According to a report by the University of the West Indies, a joint research center was established on April 24 in the suburb of Cave Hill, as a collaboration between Barbados and the People’s Republic of China. Specifically, the agreement for the creation of the center was signed between the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the China University of Political Science and Law.
In this regard, Xinhua Huan, chargé d’affaires at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Barbados, stated that the commitment between both nations, through the aforementioned institutions, will be supported by funding of 20,000 USD provided by the Asian country.
The Chinese official also emphasized that the creation of the China-Caribbean Joint Research Center (JCCRC) represents a milestone in the relationship between his country and the Caribbean region, as well as an important step in the development of academic relations between the two nations. He also regarded it as a success for both academic institutions.
He further expressed that both he and his country hope “the fund will help foster the exchange of ideas, generate new proposals in academic research, and further broaden the perspectives of all those involved.”
For his part, Dr. Antonius Hippolyte, Interim Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of the West Indies, highlighted that this agreement will enable joint work between both institutions and countries, fostering understanding and collaboration on international and global issues.
Likewise, Dr. Hippolyte remarked that this research center reflects mutual respect and a collaborative spirit between both parties, focused on sustainable development, openness to knowledge, and innovation.
Specifically, the academic stated that “the center will not only serve as a space for collaborative research but also as a bridge, connecting minds, ideas, and experiences across oceans and borders.” He also expressed that the goal of this agreement is to foster the development of prominent policymakers, leading scientists, and thought leaders who will contribute to the progress of both regions and the construction of a prosperous future.
Last but not least, following the inauguration of the research center, the two academic institutions from Barbados and China held a forum on the Law of the Sea, which addressed topics such as the development and delimitation of maritime boundaries, climate change, the role of environmental laws in Barbados, and coastal governance.
