In recent years, Chile has presented high levels of clothing imports. In 2017, the ICEX Spain – Export and Investment Institute, published the report “The clothing and footwear market in Chile,” in which it determined that 70% of clothing sales, between 2014 and 2016, were of imported products. However, since 2021, Chile has presented an increase in its fashion exports from China. According to a report presented last year by Chile’s National Customs Directorate, between the months of January and June 2021, the country increased its imports of garments from China by 13.99% compared to the same period of time in 2020. There was a similar growth in the footwear sector in terms of imports, whereby in June 2021, the country increased its imports by 80% compared to the same month in the previous year.
Currently, the People’s Republic of China is the largest exporter of clothing to Chile. A report presented by Chile’s National Chamber of Commerce shows that, in the second quarter of this year, the Asian country was responsible for 64.9% of Chile’s clothing imports, which was lower than its share (77.4%) in the first quarter of the year. The other two countries that follow the Asian country in share of clothing exports to Chile are Bangladesh (7.5%) and Vietnam (2.9%).
