According to a report by La República, the general manager of the Chinese companies Changan and Deepal, Juan Carlos López, stated that at least 12 out of every 100 automobiles arriving in Colombia come from the People’s Republic of China.
Likewise, López shared the strategies they use to remain competitive in the market and mentioned that they also operate a business for auto parts imported from Thailand, India, China, Japan, and Mexico. Additionally, he expressed concern about the tariffs that could be imposed by the Ministry of Commerce, pointing out that this could impact consumers and their decision to purchase a vehicle.
Among the brands that stand out in the Colombian market are Deepal and Changan, accounting for 5.5% of the total, and Chery, with 3.64%. These Chinese brands have around 45 sales outlets throughout Colombia, which has facilitated their growth in the country’s market.
Regarding sales in 2024, it was reported that it was a challenging year for the automotive sector. In the first six months, 85,000 vehicles were sold, representing a decrease of 5,000 units compared to the 90,000 sold in the first half of 2023.
In contrast, the second half of 2024 showed signs of recovery, driven by greater stability in interest rates, which were even lower than in 2023. During this period, the market achieved an 8% growth compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, the Deepal and Changan brands experienced a significant increase in sales, managing to double their numbers between December 2023 and December 2024.
Regarding the decree announced by the Ministry of Commerce, which could raise tariffs and introduce new duties, López stated that while this would affect car brands, the primary impact would fall on consumers. Additionally, although he understands the government’s protectionist policies in this sector, he believes that the domestic automotive industry is still insufficient to meet demand.
On another note, López reported that Deepal recently launched a new SUV, the Deepal S07, which features advanced technology and is already available at the brand’s sales points. He also expressed that, despite being relatively new to the market, the company expects to reach and exceed sales of at least 1,200 units in 2025.
Electric vehicles have also seen significant growth in the Colombian market. Within this segment of the automotive sector, brands from the People’s Republic of China are the leading producers.
According to a report from Yahoo Finanzas, electric car sales in Colombia grew by 264.5%, comparing last month’s figures with those of March 2024. This increase was driven by the sale of more than 1,380 units.
Similarly, hybrid vehicles, mostly manufactured by Chinese brands, also saw a nearly 50% increase in sales compared to March 2024. Data revealed that Colombian consumers have shown a greater interest in SUV-type vehicles, which saw a 49.5% increase in sales, followed by other SUVs with a 47% increase, and sedans, which grew by 27%.
