Colombia’s Minister of Trade, Industry, and Tourism, Luis Carlos Reyes, celebrated the inauguration of a new direct maritime trade route between Shanghai and Buenaventura, operated by the Chinese state-owned shipping company Cosco. This new link marks a milestone in bilateral trade, enhancing transport efficiency and reducing transit times to just 25 days.
The first vessel, Xin Hong Kong, arrived at the port of Buenaventura with a capacity to transport 50,000 tons of cargo. The General Maritime Directorate (Dimar) oversaw the container ship’s arrival, ensuring that the route will operate with regular stops, strengthening trade between the two nations.
The Buenaventura Mayor’s Office highlighted that this connection will boost Colombian exports, strengthen trade with one of the world’s largest markets, and promote economic and social development in the region. Additionally, the opening of this route will create new job and business opportunities, contributing to a reduction in violence in the area.
Amid recent diplomatic tensions with the United States, this new link with China reinforces Colombia’s independence and diversification of foreign relations, creating greater investment and trade opportunities.
Finally, the inauguration of this maritime route brings Colombia closer to potential integration with the Belt and Road Initiative, allowing Colombian exporters to leverage a more efficient and direct connection with the Asian powerhouse.
