The regimes of China and Cuba have reportedly signed an agreement to build a large spy center on the Central American island, raising concerns in the United States over the potential expansion of Chinese intelligence activities in the region. According to US sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, negotiations for the new base are advanced. However, there is no indication of the location, size, or personnel required for the facility.

Both China and Cuba deny the existence of a Chinese spy center on the island. While the Pentagon declined to comment on the matter, the White House stated that the information published in the press is “inaccurate.” However, the Biden administration has contacted Cuban officials to express their concerns in efforts to improve relations with China. Some intelligence officials warn that China’s plans in Cuba are not fully known, and any increase in security coordination between the two countries will be approached cautiously.
