According to a report by the outlet El Comercio, the Republic of Ecuador and the People’s Republic of China signed a sanitary protocol, which will enable the South American country to export dairy products to the nation led by Xi Jinping. Among the products that may be shipped are cheese, cream, liquid milk, yogurt, butter, condensed milk, among others.
The signing of this protocol took place on April 30 of the current year, 2025, occurring one year after the signing and entry into force of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between both nations. This signature, carried out bilaterally between the authorities of both countries, will allow the shipment of dairy products from Ecuador to China.
In this regard, the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries (Mpceip) of Ecuador stated that the signed document established the quarantine and inspection requirements that these products from the South American country must meet in order to enter the People’s Republic of China.
It is known that the process leading to the signing of this protocol dates back to October of the previous year, 2024, when various institutions such as Agrocalidad, private sector companies, Arcsa, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), and the Ministry of Production were working jointly to ensure that technical and diplomatic negotiations between both governments would lead to an agreement, which resulted in the signature on April 30.
Among the procedures that had to be carried out for both countries to sign the protocol, a highlight was the inspection of three dairy processing industries and six dairy farms in the country, conducted by a delegation from the General Administration of Customs of China, the institution responsible for carrying out the technical inspections.
Now, companies in this sector from Ecuador will have to go through a process to be registered with the General Administration of Customs of China, the institution responsible for establishing the minimum thresholds for the entry of Ecuadorian companies’ products into the People’s Republic of China.
Regarding this signing, Danilo Palacios, Minister of Agriculture of Ecuador, emphasized that his country produces more milk than its population consumes, which is why opening new export destinations is necessary for the current situation of the nation. Specifically, the high-ranking official stated that they have “a countless number of dairy derivatives with great potential in a dynamic market like China.”
Likewise, the Vice Minister of Production and Industries, Andrés Robalino, commented that this new destination for Ecuador’s dairy products will contribute to the development of the country’s exports, generating a greater presence of its products in the international market.
According to a report by the Ministry of Production, this signing of the sanitary protocol falls within the Ecuadorian government’s market diversification policy, which aims to stimulate the rural economy and support the competitive development of this sector.
Last but not least, it is important to highlight that the Ecuadorian dairy industry generates around 500,000 direct and indirect jobs, and with the opening of the Chinese market, which has 1.4 billion consumers, it is expected that the export of this product will grow and, likewise, new jobs can be created.
