Last March, Ecuador implemented a regulation to promote the production and commercialization of milk and its derivatives, applying a law that had been in force since May 2022. This coincided with the closure of technical negotiations for the sanitary protocol that will allow the export of Ecuadorian dairy products to China, which concluded in September.
With the imminent opening of the Chinese market, the Ecuadorian dairy sector has high expectations but also faces challenges in terms of production and investment.
The Minister of Agriculture, Danilo Palacios, announced that the official opening of the Chinese market for Ecuadorian dairy products will take place in November, during a fair in China, where the agreement will be symbolically signed. This achievement is part of the benefits of the free trade agreement between Ecuador and China, in force since May of this year.
According to Palacios, this agreement responds to China’s interest in diversifying its sources of food, especially in a context of global concern about food security.
Despite the enthusiasm, the Ecuadorian dairy sector still faces challenges to begin exports to China. Juan Pablo Grijalva, manager of the Association of Cattle Ranchers of the Sierra and Oriente, indicated that the sale of high-protein milk, a product in demand in the Chinese market, is being explored.
However, Grijalva warned that due to the need to adjust production and comply with sanitary requirements, the export of these products could begin in about a year. Additionally, Ecuador is working to ensure that other products such as avocado, mango, and dragon fruit also enter the Chinese market.
