China and Honduras have formalized a Memorandum of Understanding on Educational Cooperation, enabling nearly 30 young Hondurans to pursue higher education in Chinese universities with full government scholarships during the 2025-2026 academic year.
The signing and admission letter handover ceremony took place at the Augusto C. Coello Hall of the Honduran Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the attendance of Foreign Minister Javier Efraín Bú Soto, Chinese Ambassador to Honduras Yu Bo, and Deputy Minister of Education Jaime Rodríguez.
The scholarships cover tuition, accommodation, living expenses, and medical insurance, while also ensuring that host universities provide optimal study and living conditions. According to Honduran authorities, the program represents a significant step in developing the country’s human capital and enhancing international opportunities for its youth.
Minister Bú Soto emphasized that the initiative reflects China’s support for Honduras’ development priorities, particularly the training of highly skilled professionals. He also pointed to recent achievements in bilateral cooperation, such as the inauguration of the Confucius Institute in May, which offers Chinese language and cultural programs, and ongoing improvements to educational infrastructure through Chinese cooperation.
Ambassador Yu Bo explained that the scholarships are part of China’s Global Civilization Initiative, promoted by President Xi Jinping, which seeks to foster cultural exchange, academic cooperation, and sustainable development. He indicated that Beijing intends to expand such programs in the coming years, making full scholarships available to Honduran students on an annual basis.
During the event, scholarship recipients and their families expressed enthusiasm and gratitude for the opportunity. Rachell Ávila Medina, a civil engineering student, described the award as “a bridge of exchange between nations, cultures, and dreams” and committed to returning to Honduras with the skills and knowledge needed to contribute to the country’s development.
The agreement strengthens the educational component of China-Honduras relations, complementing cooperation in infrastructure and technology transfer. Authorities from both sides noted that beyond individual opportunities, the program will have a multiplier effect, benefiting communities and professional sectors when graduates return to the country.
