Honduras has finalized a major agreement with China to export 200,000 quintals of coffee, benefiting more than 4,500 small and medium-sized producers through five national companies. According to Carlos Murillo, Deputy Minister of Coffee at SAG, the first shipment of 48 containers, carrying over 20,000 quintals, will be delivered this week to a Chinese logistics company responsible for distribution.
Murillo emphasized that the selling price exceeds market rates and that a favorable price differential was secured for producers. Additionally, China made a 10% advance payment on the contract, an uncommon practice in such transactions, which builds confidence in the commercialization process for Honduran coffee growers.
Currently, China is the world’s fifth-largest coffee consumer, but its rapidly evolving consumption patterns could make it a top global market for coffee within the next five years.
