On July 7th, the Chinese government convened in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, with the aim of strengthening the negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement between the two countries. This meeting was prompted by the severance of diplomatic relations between Honduras and Taiwan. The inauguration ceremony, held at a hotel in the Honduran capital, was led by China’s Vice Minister of Commerce, Wang Shouwen, and Honduras’ Foreign Minister, Enrique Reina, accompanied by the Minister of Economic Development, Fredis Cerrato. During the meeting, they sought to develop trade plans to foster development and prosperity in both nations.

The negotiation between the two countries included China’s Vice Minister of Commerce, Wang Shouwen, and Honduras’ Foreign Minister, Enrique Reina, along with Minister of Economic Development, Fredis Cerrato. For Honduras, this meeting marks a milestone in advancing relations with China, aligning with President Xiomara Castro’s decision to recognize the principle of “One China.” Minister Cerrato emphasized the opportunity to learn from China, especially regarding policies that have improved the living conditions of its citizens and transformed China into a global power. Additionally, the proposed interoceanic train project by Honduras was highlighted during the meeting to bolster negotiations and international trade. “Different Honduran governments for over a hundred years have been interested in a railway line that connects the Pacific in the south with the Atlantic in the north.”
