The Competition in the Automotive and Battery Sector in Latin America

In recent years, the competition between the United States and the People’s Republic of China for the automotive and lithium battery market in Latin America has intensified significantly. Actions such as the $620 million investment to build a BYD automobile plant in Brazil, the construction of Tesla’s megafactory in Mexico valued at $10 billion, and the $6 billion investment by Leapmotor in South America highlight the strategic interest these countries have in the region.
Similarly, other Latin American countries have also attracted the attention of China and the United States in this sector. In Colombia, for instance, Tesla made a $2.5 billion investment following the approval of a Simplified Joint Stock Company (SAS) by the Bogotá Chamber of Commerce. In Chile, Tesla has established agreements to secure lithium supplies, a crucial mineral for the production of its electric vehicle batteries.
These investments in the electric mobility (eMobility) sector not only address economic and financial interests but also reflect a geopolitical strategy. Both the People’s Republic of China and the United States aim to position themselves as the leading suppliers in the automotive and battery market in Latin America. With Donald Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency, this competitive dynamic is expected to intensify further.
In conclusion, Latin America has solidified its position as a region of significant geostrategic and political interest for both China and the United States. This has led to substantial capital investments and the establishment of partnerships and agreements between Latin American countries and the major companies from both nations.
