Chinese migration to Mexico soars by over 42,000% in five years

Mexico has seen a surge of more than 42,000% in irregular migration of Chinese nationals into the country over the past five years. According to reports from the Interior Ministry, the arrival of irregular migrants from China has increased by a staggering 42,367% since 2019.

Just five years ago, only 33 Chinese nationals were detained for entering the country irregularly, but by 2023 that figure soared to 14,014, and in the first seven months of 2024 11,256 irregular Chinese migrants had already been found in Mexico.

While Venezuelans have been the most prominent group to migrate to Mexico due to the political and economic crisis in their home country, Chinese migrants have also begun to arrive in significant numbers. 

Most of the Chinese migrants arriving in Mexico are located in Mexico City, particularly in the Historic Center, where they have acquired property to set up businesses. Many of these businesses sell products without proper customs stamps or required authorization. 

According to Luis García Villagrán, director of the Centre for Human Dignification, the arrival of Chinese nationals is largely due to agreements with organized crime, as these migrants often have the resources to finance their journey irregularly. It is estimated that they pay between US$500 and US$1,000 to be transported to different parts of the country.

Another difficulty they face is language, as most do not speak Spanish or English, which makes them more vulnerable to extortion and kidnapping by smugglers. According to Gabriela Hernández, director of the Tochan shelter, some Chinese migrants have expressed their desire to stay in Mexico and open businesses, although many others continue to try to reach the United States, facing serious difficulties along the way.

On the border with Panama, authorities have recorded an increase in the number of Chinese nationals attempting to cross the perilous Darien Jungle. While between 2010 and 2022, just over 2,000 crossing attempts were recorded, in 2023 alone the figure soared to 25,000, reflecting the magnitude of the migration phenomenon present across the region.
