According to a report by CB24, written by Helicet Benavides, within the framework of the “China-CELAC Forum,” Nicaragua and the People’s Republic of China signed a contract for the provision of military equipment and technology intended for the Central American country’s army. The contract is part of a broader agreement with the company Poly Technologies.
According to the government of Daniel Ortega, the agreement aims to strengthen the defense of Nicaragua’s sovereignty and peace by reinforcing the army’s capacity to fulfill its constitutional duties.
It is worth noting that Poly Technologies, a subsidiary of the state-owned China Poly Group Corporation, was sanctioned by the United States in 2024, after being accused of providing sensitive military technologies to certain Russian companies also under sanctions due to the conflict in Ukraine.
This was not the only agreement signed between the two nations. Three additional projects were also formalized: one with Yutong for the supply of municipal cleaning machinery and buses; another with Huawei for a digital connectivity project; and one with CCSI for the development of logistics platforms to be used at the Port of Corinto.
The Nicaraguan delegation at the forum was led by Laureano Ortega Murillo, son of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, who serves as presidential advisor. Ortega Murillo was granted constitutional authority to represent the government and sign any agreements reached.
During the forum, he held meetings with Chinese officials and companies, including Power China and Huadian, which already maintain ties with Nicaragua through the Mojolka and Tumarín hydroelectric projects, as well as with entities involved in industrial, mining, and banking development.
Last but not least, it is worth mentioning that Nicaragua and the People’s Republic of China reestablished diplomatic relations in December 2021, after severing ties with Taiwan. A key moment in this renewed relationship occurred in December 2023, when both nations elevated their ties to a “strategic partnership.”
