Chinese delegation visits Nicaragua to strengthen bilateral ties
A delegation from the Communist Party of China has arrived in Nicaragua to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.
Led by Zhang Wenwang, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China and governor of the People’s Government of Chuxiong Prefecture, the delegation met in Managua with representatives of the Nicaraguan government, led by Laureano Ortega Murillo, presidential advisor for investment, trade and international cooperation.
The main objective of the visit is to strengthen the friendship and economic cooperation between the two countries. During the scheduled meetings, several topics are expected to be discussed, including investments in trade, agriculture, energy, tourism, higher education and creative economy.
In addition, several important agreements are expected to be signed, including a sister city agreement with the city of Granada in Nicaragua, a memorandum of understanding on educational cooperation between Chuxiong University and the National Council of Universities, and a cooperation agreement on energy and mining development, with a focus on contaminated soil remediation and solid waste management.
Over the last year, there has been a continued rapprochement between China and Nicaragua. In January of this year, the Free Trade Agreement signed between both countries came into effect, and since then several more agreements have also been struck between the two countries.
Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega has praised the strengthening of diplomatic relations between China and Nicaragua, classifying them as a “strategic partnership”. This decision was formalized after a telephone conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ortega.
Diplomatic relations between both countries were established in 1985, but were interrupted when Nicaragua established ties with Taiwan in 1990.
However, in December 2021, Nicaragua resumed relations with China, marking a significant milestone in its diplomacy. This approach reflects Nicaragua’s growing interest in strengthening its relationship with China and advancing opportunities for economic cooperation and mutual development.
