A Paraguayan parliamentary delegation, led by the president of Congress, Silvio Ovelar, together with senators Pedro Díaz Verón and Hermelinda Alvarenga, has made a visit to Taiwan with the aim of strengthening bilateral ties and better understanding the political, economic, and technological progress of the Asian island.
During the visits, from April 14 to 18, the Paraguayan delegation is scheduled to meet with President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President Lai Ching-te, in addition to participating in events organized by Taiwanese authorities.
Taiwan and Paraguay maintain a strong alliance, with Paraguay being one of Taiwan’s strongest allies in South America. This diplomatic relationship has endured for 66 years, highlighting the deep affection and friendship between the two countries and governments. Ovelar expressed this sentiment upon arriving in Taiwan, emphasizing Paraguay’s support for Taiwan, especially in its right to participate in the United Nations and its associated events.
The commitment to strengthening bilateral ties was also underscored by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which pledged to promote cooperation to enhance the welfare of both countries. In this regard, the Paraguayan parliamentary delegation is due to visit various Taiwanese institutions, including the International Cooperation and Development Fund and the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, to explore opportunities for mutual collaboration in economic and social development.
These visits not only seek to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various areas, but also provide Paraguay with a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s development model and technological advances. They also reinforce the commitment of both nations to multilateralism and participation in international organizations, fundamental aspects for Taiwan in its quest for recognition and participation in the international community.
In addition, the presence of Paraguayan senators at the Taipei Metro Operations Control Center, Taiwan FactCheck Center, Cathay General Hospital and Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum allowed for an exchange of knowledge and experiences in areas such as infrastructure management, data verification, medical care and cultural preservation.
