According to a report by Canal N, the People’s Republic of China is considering new investments in the megaport of Chancay, located in Lima, Peru, which was inaugurated at the end of 2024. In this regard, the Deputy General Manager of Cosco Shipping Ports Chancay Peru, Carlos Tejada, stated that the expansion of this project depends on the Peruvian Congress approving the Private Special Economic Zone (ZEEP).
Regarding expansion plans in Chancay, it has been reported that the Chinese company Cosco Shipping has invested over $1.3 billion in the port’s construction and aims to continue fostering its development with new investments. In the future, the installation of an electric vehicle assembly plant, logistics distribution centers, and a transformer manufacturing plant is projected.
Additionally, Carlos Tejada explained that since 2017, Cosco Shipping Ports has established two key conditions for its investment: the creation of a logistics cluster between Chancay and the port of Callao, and the designation of the port’s territorial area as a special economic zone. He also noted that securing the approval of the ZEEP is crucial for China’s investment in Peru, given the political uncertainty the country has faced in recent years.
Last but not least,, the Chinese ambassador to Peru, Song Yang, mentioned that foreign companies from Indonesia, India, and Japan have also expressed interest in investing in the port of Chancay, provided that the Peruvian legislative body approves the Private Special Economic Zone (ZEEP).
