Venezuela and China sign agreement for conservation of tropical forests

The government of Venezuela and the People’s Republic of China have signed a cooperation agreement for the conservation of tropical forests in Venezuela, aiming to protect the environment and promote space research. Sectorial Vice President of Science, Technology, Education, and Health, Gabriela Jiménez, announced the deal on her X account.

The agreement, signed by the president of the Bolivarian Agency for Space Activities (ABAE), Lieutenant Colonel Adolfo Godoy, along with representatives from China’s National Space Administration and the Ministry of Natural Resources, aims to generate value-added products to facilitate the conservation and protection of tropical forests.

Jiménez emphasized that this project is financed so that ABAE, in collaboration with Venezuela’s National System of Science and Technology, can implement concrete conservation protocols. Additionally, the agreement includes an agenda for oceanography development in Venezuela, using specialized satellites to develop the studies.

The new agreement is the result of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro’s visit to China in 2023, which aimed to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. 

Jiménez highlighted the space alliance between China and Venezuela, stating that “Venezuela is successfully consolidating research and development of applications in aerospace sciences.” She added that this alliance is set to contribute to building a multipolar and multicentric world.

Four delegations of the Venezuelan government currently find themselves in China, carrying out official visits and working to strengthen relations between the two countries and establish new alliances and investments with the broader Asian region. This in turn is part of Venezuela’s so-called Great Mission of Science, Technology, and Innovation, which seeks to promote the development of peoples through international partnerships.

During her stay in China, Jiménez also met with Hu Zhongming, Chairman of the China Great Wall Industrial Corporation, highlighting Venezuela’s willingness to continue cooperation with China in space matters. These meetings are part of the first China-CELAC Space Cooperation Forum, which is currently taking place in the Chinese city of Wuhan, and will run until April 26th.
