According to a report by Gestión, the People’s Republic of China stated that the United States is interfering in Venezuela’s sovereignty in response to statements by former President Donald Trump, who announced the imposition of 25% tariffs on countries importing Venezuelan oil or gas.
During an interview, Guo Jiajun, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, urged the United States not to interfere in Venezuela’s internal affairs and to lift the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration. He also called on the U.S. government to take measures that promote peace, development, and stability worldwide, including in Venezuela.
The new tariff, announced on Monday, March 31, will take effect today, April 2, and will apply to all products imported from Venezuela to the United States. During the announcement, Trump also stated that Venezuela is sending criminals of various ranks to U.S. territory.
In addition to these tariffs, the United States has imposed various sanctions on Venezuela and has even increased the reward for information leading to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, Diosdado Cabello, and Vladimir Padrino López.
Meanwhile, China has also faced new trade policies from the Trump administration, such as the universal 20% tariff on its products, a measure that the U.S. government claims aims to curb the flow of fentanyl into the country.
In response, China has called for dialogue but has also imposed tariffs of up to 15% on various U.S. products, including pork, chicken, and soybeans. Additionally, as one of the world’s leading steel producers, China announced it would take necessary measures to counter the additional tariffs on aluminum and steel imposed by the Trump administration.
It is worth noting that China is the largest importer of Venezuelan crude oil, though other countries, such as Spain, India, and even the United States, also purchase Venezuelan oil.
Last but not least, spokesperson Guo stated that this trade conflict would not benefit either side and warned that the imposed measures would negatively impact both consumers and businesses in the United States.
