Honduras Appoints Its First Ambassador to China

Honduras’ President, Xiomara Castro, officially appointed Salvador Moncada as the first Honduran Ambassador to China, marking a historic milestone following the establishment of diplomatic relations with China and the severance of ties with Taiwan in March. Moncada, a 78-year-old Honduran scientist with British citizenship, is renowned for his significant contributions in the field of cardiac treatments developed in laboratories in London. Following his appointment, Moncada noted that various initiatives are already being explored with China in areas ranging from infrastructure to science and technology, with a special emphasis on ongoing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement.

Xiomara Castro: The new President of Honduras and the outlook for the country’s relations with China

November 28th marked the general elections in Honduras for a new Head of State. Candidate Xiomara Castro, of the Libertad y Fundación Party, won with 1,709,081 votes, equivalent to 50.63% of the total. The new leader has championed numerous proposals, one that has generated the most controversy due to its diplomatic consequences has to do with the breaking of bilateral relations with Taiwan to establish them with the People’s Republic of China.

Taiwan donated to the Nacer Foundation in Honduras

On November 2, Fundación Nacer received a large donation from the Republic of China (Taiwan), amounting to one million one hundred and fifty thousand lempiras, equivalent to USD $ 47,000. The donation was made by the Taiwanese Ambassador to Honduras, Diego Wen, to support activities to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.
