Honduras and China will negotiate a Free Trade Agreement

After establishing diplomatic relations, Honduras announced that it will soon initiate negotiations for a free trade agreement with China. “We will soon begin negotiations for a free trade agreement with China, which will also be good news and opportunities for access to our products,” stated Enrique Reina, the Honduran Foreign Minister.

After breaking diplomatic relations with Honduras, Taiwan’s president visits Guatemala and Belize 

Following the termination of diplomatic relations with Honduras, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen embarked on a visit to Guatemala and Belize last week, aiming to strengthen ties with her regional allies. Tsai’s tour, which attracted controversy due to two stopovers in the United States, sought to bolster relationships in the region. In Guatemala, Tsai held a meeting with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei, during which both leaders delivered a joint message reaffirming their close bonds.

Xiomara Castro: The new President of Honduras and the outlook for the country’s relations with China

November 28th marked the general elections in Honduras for a new Head of State. Candidate Xiomara Castro, of the Libertad y Fundación Party, won with 1,709,081 votes, equivalent to 50.63% of the total. The new leader has championed numerous proposals, one that has generated the most controversy due to its diplomatic consequences has to do with the breaking of bilateral relations with Taiwan to establish them with the People’s Republic of China.

Taiwan donated to the Nacer Foundation in Honduras

On November 2, Fundación Nacer received a large donation from the Republic of China (Taiwan), amounting to one million one hundred and fifty thousand lempiras, equivalent to USD $ 47,000. The donation was made by the Taiwanese Ambassador to Honduras, Diego Wen, to support activities to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.

Paraguay, Guatemala, and Honduras congratulate Taiwan on its 110th anniversary

The Republic of China (Taiwan) celebrated its 110th anniversary on October 10 —a date known as the Double Ten Festival— with some Latin American countries sending their congratulations as part of the commemoration.
