China pushes for Argentina to join BRICS
During a meeting between Zhao Leji, the president of the Chinese People’s Assembly, and Argentine officials, including national deputy Máximo Kirchner and the head of the Chamber of Deputies, Cecilia Moreau, China expressed its support for Argentina’s entry into the BRICS group, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The aim of Argentina’s potential membership is to gain access to financial assistance provided by the group. The visit of Kirchner and Moreau to Beijing is part of a series of meetings organized by Argentine Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa, who himself met with Dilma Rousseff, the president of the New Development Bank (NDB) of the BRICS, to discuss and vote on Argentina’s accession to the institution.
Zhao Leji is a prominent figure in Chinese politics, currently serving as the chairman of the Chinese People’s Congress and the secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Control. The Chinese People’s Congress convenes annually in Beijing and fulfills various functions, including constitutional amendments, oversight of constitutional compliance, and the election and appointment of key state officials such as the President of the People’s Republic and the State Council. The meeting with Zhao Leji also included the presence of Camilo Vaca Narvaja, the Director of the Presidency of the Nation, and officials from the Argentine Embassy in China.
