The Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD has established a strategic collaboration with Raizen, a specialist in the production of sugar and ethanol, to develop an electric car charging network in Brazil. The plan includes the construction of 600 charging stations in eight Brazilian cities over the next three years.
Raizen aims to capture 25% of the charging station market in Brazil through this initiative. The collaboration seeks to address the growing demand for electric vehicle charging ports in a market experiencing rapid growth in the adoption of this technology. In 2023, electric vehicle sales in Brazil increased by 90%, reaching around 94,000 units, BYD accounted for 18,000 sales.
The installation of the 600 charging points will carry the Shell Recharge brand and will be deployed in cities such as Belo Horizonte, the capital Brasília, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Salvador and Belém, in addition to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Raizen, through its subsidiary Raizen Power, previously acquired a network of charging points from the startup Tupinamba to support its goal of leading the electric vehicle supply market in Brazil.
This project is part of both companies’ strategy to address the energy transition in Brazil, which, according to Ricardo Mussa, CEO of Raizen, is unique due to the successful adoption of hybrid and ethanol cars in the country. Alexandre Baldy, special advisor to BYD in Brazil, assured that the investment comes at a strategic moment for the company, which competes with Tesla and plans to start production in Brazil with an investment of three billion reais (over 600 million dollars).
The collaboration between BYD and Raizen follows a strategic cooperation agreement signed in 2022 by Shell and BYD to accelerate the energy transition and improve the charging experience for BYD electric and hybrid vehicle customers around the world. Although the value of the contributions to the project has not been revealed, both companies aim to consolidate their presence in the Brazilian market. The National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea) projects an additional 51% increase in electric vehicle sales in Brazil in 2024, reaching 142,000 units.
