China appoints new ambassador to Panama

The new Chinese ambassador Xu Xueyuan arrived in Panama this Monday. In the next few days Xueyuan is expected to present her credentials to the Panamanian Foreign Ministry.

Panama and China Review Their Bilateral Agenda

Panama’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vladimir Franco, met with China’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hua Chunying, to discuss bilateral agenda items. At the same time, Panama’s Minister of Agricultural Development, Augusto Valderrama, was on an official visit to China.

President Laurentino Cortizo Opposes China’s Management of the Panama Canal

Panama’s President, Laurentino Cortizo, emphatically rejected recent claims by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who insinuated that China controls the Panama Canal. Cortizo stated that Trump was ‘completely mistaken’ in his statements and emphasized that the Panama Canal is under Panamanian administration and well-managed by Panamanians.

Thirty Chinese migrants rescued in their attempt to cross from Colombia to Panama

On July 4th, the Colombian Navy rescued 30 Chinese migrants, 4 women, and 26 men near Cabo Tiburón in the department of Chocó. This happened as they were attempting to cross into Panama. The suspicious vessel was intercepted by Colombian authorities in the Gulf of Urabá. The Chinese citizens were placed under the custody of the Migration Colombia office.

Government of Panama and Chinese consortium agree to restart construction of the Fourth Bridge over the Panama Canal

The Government of Panama has signed an addendum with a Chinese consortium to resume the construction of the Fourth Bridge over the Interoceanic Canal, a significant infrastructure project with a budget of $1.518 billion. The Panama Fourth Bridge Consortium (CPCP), comprising China Communications Construction Company LTD and China Harbour Engineering Company LTD, was initially awarded the project in 2018. However, financing difficulties and design changes led to a suspension of the work in 2020.

Ambassador of Beijing in Panama handed over tactical equipment

The Chinese ambassador to Panama, Wei Qiang, delivered 6 thousand ballistic vests and 6 thousand tactical helmets valued at 4 million dollars to the Panamanian Ministry of Public Security, to “strengthen the cooperation agenda between the two nations.” The Naval Air Service and the National Border Service will receive 1,000 cases and 1,000 bulletproof vests each, while another 4,000 helmets and 4,000 vests will be delivered to the National Police.

Dragon Boat Race in Panama

Dragon boat racing is a traditional Chinese sport in which several teams compete against each other in racing boats. This sport found its way to Panama and the Dragon Boat Race was held in Amador, Panama City.

Panama requests China’s accession to the Canal Neutrality Treaty

On April 4, 2022, Panama’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Érika Mouynes, began her Asian tour in an effort to advance and strengthen bilateral relations with the countries in the region. The first Asian country the Foreign Minister visited was China, where she expressed the importance of maintaining the neutrality of the Panama Canal in light of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Panama commemorates the 169th anniversary of the arrival of the Chinese community in Panama

The first people of Chinese descent arrived in Panama 169 years ago. Approximately 750 people from China emigrated to Panama to help build railroads. A monument was erected at the lookout point of the Las Americas Bridge to recognize the work and friendship between the two countries.

Panama and the People’s Republic of China have closely linked domestic interests. Both countries strive to make progress on specific issues such as foreign investment, tourism, logistics, financial and commercial sectors, etc. This led Panama’s Foreign Minister, Erika Mouynes, to announce on March 30, 2022 the agenda of her Asian tour, which began the week of April 4, 2022.
