Panama and the People’s Republic of China have closely linked domestic interests. Both countries strive to make progress on specific issues such as foreign investment, tourism, logistics, financial and commercial sectors, etc. This led Panama’s Foreign Minister, Erika Mouynes, to announce on March 30, 2022 the agenda of her Asian tour, which began on April 4, 2022.

The first Asian country that Mouynes will visit will be China and she will travel on to Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore. The diplomat said that the main purpose of her Asian tour is to strengthen bilateral relations and promote investment between Panama and the different Asian countries. The Panamanian minister will be the first foreign minister from Latin America and the Caribbean to pay an official visit to the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. Finally, Erika Mouynes will meet with the Chinese delegation to study the certification process of local pork processing plants, which would benefit trade between the two nations.
