Chinese infrastructure projects in Latin America face challenges and criticism
The relationship between China and Latin America has evolved from a focus on raw materials to integration in logistics and value chains. However, infrastructure projects led by China in the region have faced difficulties and challenges, including labor, environmental, and quality issues. Despite this, most Chinese companies have managed to overcome these obstacles and continue to participate in investment transactions and infrastructure projects. China has embarked on infrastructure construction in Latin America as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, aiming to enhance its own logistical and trade capabilities and strengthen relationships with local governments. While mistakes have been made, China remains a significant player in infrastructure development in the region.
Large-scale construction has been a challenge in Latin America, with issues such as corruption and lack of durability in roads built by Chinese companies. However, working with Chinese companies also offers advantages such as financing facilities and willingness to take on projects that other countries may not want to become involved in. The pandemic has left unfinished projects and generated mistrust in business with China, leading Latin American countries to carefully evaluate their relationship with the Asian giant. Although China will actively seek overseas projects and investments in the future, countries must consider the feasibility and long-term benefits of proposed infrastructure. An increase in Chinese construction abroad is expected, but the real estate crisis in China and the state of its construction sector could impact its ability to sustain these activities outside its home country.
