China became the third most common country of origin among migrants in Mexico in 2023, as seen reflected in the number of applications for temporary residency registered by the Mexican government.
According to government data cited in the media El País, 5,018 Chinese migrants arrived in Mexico in 2023 to settle as temporary residents, a 157% surge between 2019 and 2013. The Asian country went from being the fifth to the third most common place of origin between 2022 and 2023.
Among the common countries of arrival, the United States ranked first, with 10,782 migrants seeking temporary residency in 2023, followed closely by Colombia with 6,734 applications. In addition, countries such as Venezuela, India, and Argentina are also among the most common destinations in the region.
The arrival of foreigners in Mexico is linked to border policies that detain those seeking to live in the U.S., whether as refugees, exiles or on visas, and they must remain in Mexico while their petition is processed, according to El País.
“Mexico’s temporary residency visa program is a key factor in the influx of Chinese nationals. It allows people to live in Mexico for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to four years. This visa is particularly attractive to those looking to test the waters before committing to a permanent relocation,” said the Washington-based international real estate firm Far Homes.
This increase in migration coincides with the downturn in the Chinese economy, which, despite the 5.2% growth seen in 2023, is a relatively low rate compared to previous years. Additionally, the real estate bubble China faces, and the economic slowdowns recorded in 2018, 2020, and 2021 have also contributed.
Likewise, according to a report published by the Mexican outlet N+, undocumented people of Chinese origin rely on networks and information through the social video platform TikTok to cross the border to the US.
