Chinese participation in Peruvian ports is generating growing concern. The Peruvian government awarded the Chinese company Jinzhao the construction of the New Port Terminal of San Juan de Marcona in a 30-year concession, with an estimated investment of US$405 million.
This port, operated by Terminal Portuario Jinzhao Peru, is expected to become the third largest in the country. However, this deal has generated controversy due to concerns about environmental impact and unfair competition.Chinese involvement in port projects worldwide has raised concerns about possible human rights abuses and serious environmental impacts.
The absence of effective policies in China to address these issues has exacerbated concerns.
The port of Chancay, majority-owned by China’s Cosco Shipping, is another prominent example of Chinese expansion in the region. While these projects promise economic benefits, they also pose challenges, including geopolitical commitments and the exploitation of strategic natural resources.
Chinese influence in the region goes beyond major ports, with massive infrastructure investments in Latin America, Asia and Africa through the Belt and Road initiative. This suggests a comprehensive strategy to control maritime and land connectivity globally.
Although China’s presence in Latin America is significant, its impact is often underestimated. The intersection between its economic and strategic interests raises complexities in international relations and global geopolitics, especially in key regions such as South America.
Concern is growing that Chinese checkbook diplomacy may compromise the sovereignty and sustainable development of recipient countries, creating dependencies and vulnerabilities. In conclusion, while Chinese investment can bring economic benefits, it also poses significant challenges that must be approached with care and consideration.
